What are the different types of HVAC terminal units?

Hey there! I’m a supplier of HVAC terminal units, and I’ve been in this industry for quite a while. Over the years, I’ve seen all sorts of HVAC terminal units, and I’m excited to share with you the different types out there. So, let’s dive right in! HVAC Terminal Unit

1. Single – Duct Terminal Units

Single – duct terminal units are pretty common, and they’re also known as single – duct VAV (Variable Air Volume) boxes. They’re used to control the volume of conditioned air that goes into a space.

The way they work is actually quite simple. There’s a damper inside the unit that opens and closes based on the needs of the space. If the room is really hot, the damper opens wide to let more cool air in. On the other hand, if the room is cool enough, the damper closes a bit to reduce the amount of air coming in.

These units are super popular because they’re cost – effective and easy to install. You can use them in offices, schools, and many other commercial buildings. We’ve sold a lot of these units for office renovations, and they’ve done a great job of keeping the temperature comfortable for the workers.

2. Fan – Powered Terminal Units

Fan – powered terminal units have a built – in fan. There are two main types: parallel fan – powered and series fan – powered units.

Parallel Fan – Powered Terminal Units
In a parallel fan – powered unit, the fan only kicks in when more airflow is needed, like when the primary air supply from the main HVAC system isn’t enough. For example, in a large open – plan office during peak occupancy times, the fan can start running to boost the air circulation. This type of unit is great for applications where you want to have some flexibility in controlling the airflow and can save energy because the fan doesn’t run all the time.

Series Fan – Powered Terminal Units
With series fan – powered units, the fan is always running. It mixes the primary air from the main HVAC system with the re – circulated air from the room. These units are really good at providing a continuous and consistent airflow, making them suitable for spaces where you need a more stable temperature, like in hospitals or laboratories.

3. Dual – Duct Terminal Units

Dual – duct terminal units have two separate ducts: one for hot air and one for cold air. Inside the unit, there are dampers that mix the hot and cold air in the right proportions to achieve the desired temperature in the space.

The advantage of dual – duct units is that they can quickly respond to changes in the room’s temperature requirements. For instance, in a hotel room, if a guest suddenly wants a much warmer temperature at night, the unit can blend more hot air into the supply. However, these units are a bit more expensive to install and operate, mainly because they need two separate airflow systems.

4. Induction Terminal Units

Induction terminal units use the principle of induction to mix the primary air from the main HVAC system with the room air. The high – velocity primary air creates a low – pressure area that draws in the room air.

These units are often used in buildings where you need to control the humidity as well as the temperature. They can work well in theaters or conference centers, where there are large numbers of people and the air quality needs to be maintained. One of the things I like about induction units is that they can provide a relatively quiet operation, which is great for places where noise can be a problem.

5. Chilled Beam Terminal Units

Chilled beam terminal units come in two types: active and passive.

Active Chilled Beams
Active chilled beams use a small amount of primary air to induce room air over the chilled beam coils. This helps to cool the room effectively. They’re often used in modern office buildings because they can be integrated into the ceiling design, giving a clean and sleek look. The primary air also helps with ventilation, which is important for maintaining good indoor air quality.

Passive Chilled Beams
Passive chilled beams rely solely on natural convection to cool the room. They don’t have a primary air supply. These are suitable for spaces where the cooling load is relatively low, like in some residential buildings or small offices. They’re energy – efficient and low – maintenance, which are big pluses.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Unit

Choosing the right type of HVAC terminal unit is crucial. It can affect the energy efficiency, comfort, and even the cost of operating the HVAC system. For example, if you choose a single – duct unit for a large open – plan area with high occupancy, it might not be able to meet the cooling or heating demands effectively. On the other hand, if you use a dual – duct unit in a small office space, it could be an overkill and a waste of money.

As a supplier, we always work closely with our customers to understand their specific needs. We consider factors like the size of the space, the occupancy rate, the type of building, and the local climate. Based on these factors, we can recommend the most suitable HVAC terminal unit for their project.
