What are the signs of insulator failure?

1. Physical Damage

One of the most obvious signs of insulator failure is physical damage. You might notice cracks, chips, or breaks on the insulator’s surface. These can happen due to a variety of reasons, like mechanical stress, impact, or even environmental factors.

For example, if there’s a lot of vibration in the electrical equipment where the insulator is installed, it can gradually cause small cracks. Over time, these cracks can grow and eventually lead to complete failure. Also, if the insulator gets hit by something during installation or maintenance, it can suffer physical damage right away.

Another thing to look at is the presence of leakage paths. Sometimes, the surface of the insulator can develop conductive paths due to contamination or surface deterioration. This can be seen as a kind of discoloration or a visible layer on the insulator. When this happens, the insulator may not be able to keep the electrical current where it’s supposed to be, and there’s a risk of short – circuits.

2. Electrical Arcing

Electrical arcing is a huge red flag when it comes to insulator failure. Arcing occurs when the electrical current jumps across an air gap or through a medium that’s not supposed to conduct electricity. You’ll usually see a bright flash of light and might even hear a popping or crackling sound.

There are a couple of reasons why arcing can happen. One is when the voltage across the insulator exceeds its designed withstand voltage. This can be due to a sudden surge in the electrical system, like a lightning strike or a power grid disturbance. Another reason is if the insulator’s surface is contaminated. Dirt, moisture, or other conductive materials on the surface can lower the insulator’s dielectric strength, making it easier for arcing to occur.

Arcing is not only a sign of insulator failure but also a very dangerous situation. It can cause damage to the surrounding electrical components, start fires, and even pose a risk to human safety. So, if you notice any signs of arcing, you need to take action right away.

3. Increased Leakage Current

Leakage current is the small amount of current that flows through an insulator under normal conditions. But when an insulator starts to fail, the leakage current can increase significantly.

You can measure the leakage current using special equipment. If the measured leakage current is higher than the normal range for that particular insulator, it’s a sign that something is wrong. There could be internal damage to the insulator, or it might be contaminated.

Increased leakage current can lead to a few problems. It can cause overheating of the insulator, which can further damage its insulation properties. It can also waste electrical energy, which is not only bad for your electricity bill but also for the overall efficiency of the electrical system.

4. Overheating

Overheating is another symptom of insulator failure. When an insulator is working properly, it should not get too hot. But if there’s a problem, it can start to heat up.

The main reason for overheating is usually increased electrical resistance. As I mentioned before, if there’s increased leakage current or physical damage to the insulator, it can cause the resistance to go up. According to the Joule’s law (P = I²R, where P is power, I is current, and R is resistance), when the resistance increases and there’s current flowing through the insulator, more power is dissipated in the form of heat.

You can detect overheating by using an infrared thermometer or by simply feeling the temperature of the insulator (but be careful as it might be too hot to touch safely). If the insulator is hotter than normal, it’s a sign that it’s under stress and may be on the verge of failure.

5. Contamination

Contamination is a common cause and a sign of insulator failure. Insulators are often exposed to the environment, and they can get covered with dirt, dust, salt, or other pollutants.

When the insulator is contaminated, the surface conductivity can increase. This is because the contaminants can form a conductive layer on the surface, allowing the electrical current to flow more easily across the insulator. As a result, the insulator’s performance is affected, and there’s a higher risk of electrical arcing and leakage current.

You can usually see the signs of contamination visually. The insulator might look dirty, and there could be a buildup of visible deposits on its surface. In coastal areas, for example, salt spray can deposit on the insulators, causing problems over time.

6. Loss of Hydrophobicity

For some types of insulators, like silicone rubber insulators, hydrophobicity is an important property. Hydrophobic means that the material repels water.

When an insulator loses its hydrophobicity, it becomes more prone to water absorption. Water on the insulator’s surface can reduce its dielectric strength and increase the likelihood of electrical arcing and leakage current.

You can test the hydrophobicity of an insulator by observing how water behaves on its surface. If the water beads up and rolls off easily, the insulator still has good hydrophobicity. But if the water spreads out and forms a film on the surface, it’s a sign that the hydrophobicity is being lost.
